SALAmanders Shawn Shih and Conor Robinson are hosting a wine tasting event at Peking Tavern in support of the Humanist Service Corps (HSC). Shawn is on HSC's advisory board, and Conor is the founder of the volunteering program.

A representative from Private Cask Imports will be on hand to pour and explain three French wines that pair nicely with the restaurant's authentic Beijing street food. The restaurant will serve free appetizers in the first hour.

The event is free but space is limited! You can reserve your seat by making a donation at fbbgive.org (add a note to your donation indicating it is for the wine tasting). Suggested minimum donation is $25. All proceeds will support HSC's efforts to stop witch-hunting and other forms of gender-based discrimination in Ghana!

You probably don't live in fear of being branded a witch. Chances are, you think of witchcraft accusations as a thing of the past - best remembered as a dark period in the history of seventeenth-century Salem. Still, you can imagine what it would be like to be blamed for a neighbor's miscarriage, a child's illness, or a bad harvest - and to be forced to flee with nothing but what you can carry to a desolate camp for other exiles like you. This is exactly what happens to elderly women in Ghana's Northern Region. Scapegoated, banished, forced to farm and fetch water well into their eighties.

By supporting HSC's work, you can do something to stop these accusations from occurring. Human rights abuses occur most commonly where people have insufficient access to education, healthcare, and jobs. That's why the Humanist Service Corps (HSC) works with grassroots organizations in Ghana to provide these basic needs and empower members of the local community.
