Despite official church-state separation, non-believers in the American military establishment regularly face high levels of official religious promotion and discrimination.
Jason Torpy, the president of non-profit Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers (MAAF) is in town to speak to us at a special Tuesday event about this unique brand of religious privilege and what we can do to support freethinking servicemen and women. MAAF's mission is "to provide a supportive community for nontheistic service members, to educate military leaders about nontheism, and to resolve insensitive practices that illegally promote religion or unethically discriminate against nontheism."
Torpy, a West Point graduate, Iraq veteran, and former Army Captain, will talk about atheists in foxholes, humanists, and other nontheists serving in the military. He will discuss successes, the major obstacles to equality for nontheists, and the specific and simple changes that could be made but for powerful anti-atheist opposition at the highest levels of the military.
Join Sunday Assemblers and other members of the local freethought community at this rare opportunity to hear Jason talk about this timely and vital issue.

Care Packages Requested!
MAAF has requested that we help actively deployed humanists and their friends by assembling and mailing care packages. The most requested items include games, snacks, books and personal letters. Books or letters about humanism are also welcome (and will be distributed to known Humanists only).
It would be most helpful if you can drop off items or care packages at Sunday Assembly on October 11th or on November 8th at 817 Vine Street. We will also gratefully accept items at the October 13th event.
After our November 8th Assembly, at about 12:45pm, we'll gather to assemble these care kits and write letters. Please RSVP and join us! sundayassemblyla.org/kits_for_our_troops
