Community Day @ Emerson Avenue Community Garden!
Please join Sunday Assembly LA and the folks at Emerson Avenue Community Garden for their Community Day from 9 am to noon, as they build out a great space. Recent activities have included installing a storage system, water proofing compost bays and benches, shredding compost material, painting, and weeding and mulching.
There will be lots of fun things to do for all ages and skill levels. The very young can enjoy the kids area, where they can play with kid-sized garden tools, make mud pies, and more! Lots of fun things to do for all ages and skill levels. Morning treats provided.
Emerson Avenue Community Garden will also have a seasonal seed and seedling swap.
What is the Emerson Ave. Community Garden?
The site of the Emerson Avenue Community Garden adjacent to Orville Wright Middle School was once used in the school’s agricultural program. Over time, the area deteriorated into a derelict weed patch used for the storage of school equipment and dumpsters.
In 2006, the local community initiated an effort to revitalize the area into a pocket park, but due to funding issues, that never evolved. Instead, the direction changed to develop the land into a healthy and vibrant shared green space. In 2010, a group of community members and teachers at the middle school formed an alliance with a local environmental group to achieve this goal. That evolved into the formation of the EACGC, which was incorporated in February of 2011. To find out more about the Garden, visit them on the web at: www.eacgc.org.
Hope you can join us, and be sure to wear your Sunday Assembly T-Shirt!
