Jean Baudrillard (modern french philosopher) said this about Kubrick's film: Barry Lyndon is the best example: one never did better, one will never do better in ... in what? Looking at any other director’s work, you’d be understandably perplexed seeing this sumptuous adaptation of William Thackeray’s 19th century novel sandwiched in their filmography between an ultra-violent satire on dystopian youth (A Clockwork Orange, 1971) and a horror epic of a bestselling Stephen King novel (The Shining, 1980). But with pantheon auteur Stanley Kubrck, it simply seems business as usual. Initially, the film received mixed reviews and lukewarm box office, but Barry Lyndon is now considered one of Kubrick’s finest achievements. Meticulous production design effortlessly transports the viewer to another era. Cinematographer John Alcott described the use of candlelight to illuminate interior sequences as leaving one ballroom’s high ceiling blackened with soot before the end of the day’s filming. With a sterling supporting cast, including Patrick Magee, Hardy Kruger, Leon Vitali and Andre Morell. A winner of four Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction, and critic Roger Ebert hailed it as “one of the most beautiful films ever made.”

The New Beverly Cinema is on, guess what, Beverly Blvd., just a block west of S La Brea Ave, on the north side. Street parking available on Beverly Blvd. and Formosa Avenue. Meters on Beverly Blvd. now operate until 8 pm every night. Plentiful non-metered parking is generally available on the first block of Formosa Ave. immediately north of Beverly Blvd. and is unrestricted after 6 p.m. and all day Sunday on that block. Other blocks of Formosa Ave. are now restricted after 6 pm (Please read signs carefully). The first block of Detroit Ave. immediately north of Beverly Blvd. (past the meters) is restricted after 6 pm Mon—Sat, but is completely unrestricted all day on Sundays. Served by MTA lines 14 (Beverly Blvd.) and 212 (La Brea).
