In the last two years, Generation Atheist has twice counter-protested the WBC, and raised about $150 for the Jeff Griffith Center!
Karen from Generation Atheist was there last year for a counter protest, and it went swimmingly. The police were actively keeping things from becoming troublesome and keeping dialogue open for any complaints the WBC members made (they did make a few).
Appropriate signs for you to bring (if you aren’t familiar with the WBC) are humorous or serious pro-LGBT rights. Here are some examples from Google Images. Karen will bring some extra markers and poster board for anyone who doesn’t bring a sign. Also, feel free to wear freethought-related t-shirts. Karen will have a decorated plastic container to collect donations in for the Jeff Griffith LGBT youth center, from anyone that passes by and is annoyed by the WBC’s presence and wants to fight back with a contribution!
Parking is hard to find. If you don't mind walking, there is usually a good deal of parking around Roxbury Park at 471 South Roxbury Drive. If you don't mind a bit of a walk, there is usually more parking south of Olympic, and around the medical building north of Wilshire at Roxbury. Please read posted signs carefully. Both the BH and LA sides in this area are aggressively patrolled by parking enforcement and protests/events bring 'em out in droves. You’ll probably want to get there at least half an hour early, in case you need to walk from your parking spot!
