September 10 Sunday Assembly

The Rest is Still Unwritten:

"Why We Need Diverse Books"

So often, the stories we hear are filtered through gatekeepers in publishing, advertising, film-making and other media, and the majority can quietly, even unconsciously, silence the stories of people who don't think and look like them. Maria Alexander, Bram Stoker award winning author, will talk about some surprising challenges she encountered publishing a novel featuring an atheist woman of color, why it's important for young people to see people like them in stories, and what we can do to seek out stories that might otherwise go unwritten.
Maria Alexander is a multiple Bram Stoker Award-winning and Anthony Award-nominated author of both YA and adult fiction. She’s also a student of Japanese swordsmanship. (Don't ask her which is mightier. You might regret it.) She lives in Los Angeles with two ungrateful cats, a Jewish Christmas caroler, and a purse called Trog.

Our house band, Ground Control, will be performing with the Wonder-More Warblers. Thank you, Ben Castellana, Fletcher Crossman, Don Mogill, KT Sharp and Yari Shutzer!

Special guest Steve Watkins from Backdraft shares an original song.

Deb Nash is Trying Her Best.

Amy Boyle and Ryan Trout host!

If you have any to spare, please bring a canned or nonperishable food item, as we are collecting these for Food Pantry LAX. We're also collecting your used solar ecclipse glasses on behalf of Astronomers without Borders.

Join us to find your seat at 11 am, and at 11:30 we will have great talks, live music and secular celebration. Stick around afterward for coffee and snacks, and, if you're still game, lunch at Loreley's down the street.

Sunday Assembly is free of charge, and online donations are gratefully accepted.

(Currently, we're not able to accept on-site donations at this venue. If you'd like to support SA, an entirely donor supported and volunteer powered non-profit, you can find us here: https://sundayassemblyla.nationbuilder.com/donate

For sustaining memberships: https://sundayassemblyla.nationbuilder.com/monthly)

Everyone is welcome. Free childcare provided.

3 hours of free parking is available on a first come basis. The Southwest parking Lot off Santa Monica (closest to Fiesta Hall) and the larger North Parking Lot off Fountain and Vista are both free and open to the public.

* Please note that our website is no longer accepting plus-ones for RSVPs. We ask that all adults RSVP individually or sign in at the Assembly. This ensures that you and your party can stay together while signing in, and it helps us improve our statistical data so we can keep working to improve the Sunday Assembly community. Thank you for your understanding.
