AssembleCon 2024 Conference Code of Conduct

October 17-20, 2024

Welcome to AssembleCon! We are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all attendees. To ensure the best experience for everyone, we ask that all participants adhere to the following Code of Conduct:

  1. Respect for All
    • Be Kind and Considerate: Treat everyone with respect, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, age, physical appearance, disability, or other individual characteristics.
    • Engage Constructively: When speaking, consider how your comments may impact individuals from different communities or backgrounds. When listening, be open to different viewpoints and maintain a spirit of curiosity. When disagreeing, seek to understand and avoid escalatory language.
    • Harassment-Free Environment: Harassment, abuse, and discrimination, will not be tolerated. Harassment is any targeted, persistent, unwelcome behavior, irrespective of intent. Abuse is any targeted unwelcome behavior that is likely to cause harm, irrespective of intent to cause harm. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual harassment, offensive jokes, and unwanted advances.
    • Make Space for Each Other: While we aim to optimize everyone’s experience, remember that everyone is having a different experience. Many disabilities and challenges are invisible. Make charitable assumptions and leave room for the unknown.
  2. Community Safety
    • Physical and Emotional Safety: Help create a space where all attendees feel safe and respected. Enthusiastic affirmative consent is key in all interactions. Be mindful of personal space and emotional well-being, as well as potential power dynamics between you and other community members.
    • Report Misconduct: If you witness or experience harassment, discrimination, or any form of misconduct, please report it to one of the designated event organizers, whose contact information is available in the program, or submit a report to the Creator Accountability Network via their hotline at 617-249-4255, or at https://creatoraccountabilitynetwork.org/resources/make-a-report/. If there is an emergency, please call 911.
  3. Inclusion and Accessibility
    • Be Inclusive: Make sure that your language, actions, and participation are inclusive and considerate of everyone’s abilities and identities so that everyone can feel welcome to engage as their authentic selves.
    • Respect Access Needs: If someone expresses a need for accommodation, such as seating preferences or assistance during an activity, be respectful and supportive. Don’t assume anyone’s needs—ask first.
  4. Participation and Engagement
    • To the extent possible, attend scheduled events on time, engage in the activities, and participate actively in the community. This helps foster connection and contributes everyone’s experience at AssembleCon.
    • Share the Space: Give others the chance to participate. Be mindful of time when asking questions or contributing to discussions.
  5. Respect Event Policies
    • Follow Event Guidelines: Respect all conference rules, including those regarding COVID-19 safety measures, photography, and the use of event spaces.
    • Substance Policy: Please adhere to local laws regarding alcohol consumption and recreational substances, and maintain a responsible, respectful demeanor at all times.
  6. Media and Privacy
    • Documentation of Events: At different times during the weekend, there may be recording, photography and/or streaming of content for promotional and content-sharing purposes. A limited camera zone is available in the back 2 rows of the theatre, and organizers will make best efforts not to document in that area. Reasonable measures to protect privacy and accurately represent the spirit of the event will be taken.
    • Be Thoughtful: If you share photographs, social media posts, etc. please ensure that the content you share reflects the spirit of the event and the privacy of individuals.
  7. Accountability
    • Take Responsibility: If someone raises a concern about your behavior, listen with the goal of understanding how you may have caused harm, even unintentionally. We are all here to help each other learn and grow.
    • Consequences for Violations: Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in removal from the event without a refund, and in some cases, barring from future events at the discretion of the organizers.
